Ortho-K
Ortho-Keratology lenses are increasingly popular in the USA, Australia and China and becoming better known here. The modern computer designed lenses have been around for about 15 years. The reason for their popularity is twofold, they’re very safe and in 90% of cases prevent shortsightedness from increasing.
Ortho-K lenses are custom designed by us to wear while you sleep at night for the temporary correction of myopia (shortsightedness) with or without moderate astigmatism.
While you sleep, the gentle, harmless pressure from your eyelid on the lens is transferred to your tear layer changing the shape of your cornea which improves your vision overnight.
You can see clearly through these special Gas permeable lenses both when you put them in and if you wake up in the night.
When you remove the lenses in the morning, you can see well without lenses or glasses, like harmless laser surgery.
Our very first patient has been safely wearing this lens type for 12 years with 6/6 20/20 vision and great comfort. She was -2.00 myopic aged 13 and still has the same prescription now. Her mother is very shortsighted and decided on Ortho K to prevent this happening to her daughter.
Many of our young Ortho k wearers are very successful in their use of these lenses and enjoy their many benefits. Surprisingly, studies show children are better at handling lenses, cleaning and caring for them than adults.
It’s a safer alternative to laser surgery for children or adults and works best on up to moderate myopia of -4.00DS to -5.00DS and up to -2.00DC astigmatism.
